About One Million Orphans
Founded by Jeanne Celestine Lakin, a Rwandan Genocide survivor, and former orphan, One Million Orphans is a nonprofit program that raises money to care for orphans around the world. After witnessing a new generation of children struggling Jeanne has dedicated her life to helping vulnerable children. The organization provides care such as food, clothing, education, medical care and counseling to children in need, and it's goal is to reach one million children. THE PROBLEM
Today, most children adopted internationally come from China, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ukraine. But even China, which has been the top sending country since the late 1990’s, has decreased its foreign adoptions by 86 percent. In recent decades South Korea, Romania, Guatemala, China, Kazakstan, and Russia– all former leaders in foreign adoption – have also banned or cut back on international custody transfers. International adoptions have dropped 72% since 2005. More recent reports indicate a continuation of those trends. Considering most countries have blocked international adoption, we’ve decided the best way to support orphans is to do so where they currently are. What that means is we bring resources to them so that they may have happier, healthier lives. And because many of the orphanages we support are in poverty-stricken areas, the need is great.
THE SOLUTION
Using our volunteers in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and other countries, we have identified struggling orphanages and provided support in the way of food, clothing, school supplies, and medical care. Many of these facilities are barely functioning and are in desperate need of assistance. The children living there are often under-nourished and neglected. We support these places with resources and support to operate properly. Moving forward, we are expanding our support to sustainable methods such as fishing and livestock breeding.
